A local's guide to staying in South Tampa

Groceries and errands on foot

One of the best things about this spot is that you don't need the car for the everyday stuff. Publix and Trader Joe's are both within walking distance, along with pharmacies, coffee, and a mix of shops and restaurants — handy whether you're here for a weekend or settling in for a month.

Where to eat and drink

The South Howard Avenue strip — locals call it SoHo — is South Tampa's restaurant-and-nightlife row, a short drive away and packed with everything from casual patios to Bern's Steak House, a Tampa institution. Hyde Park Village adds boutique shopping and brunch spots, and downtown's dining scene is under ten minutes by car.

Get outside

Bayshore Boulevard's waterfront path is a short drive and made for a morning run or sunset walk along the bay, with miles of uninterrupted sidewalk hugging the water. Davis Islands has a village, a dog beach, and a marina, and the downtown Riverwalk and waterfront parks are close by too.

Day trips and big nights out

The Gulf beaches around St. Pete and Clearwater are about 40 minutes away for a beach day. Busch Gardens, Amalie Arena, and the main event and concert venues are roughly 15 minutes, so games, shows, and theme-park days are all easy from here.

Hospitals close by

If you're in town for work or care, the location is hard to beat: HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital is about a 5-minute walk, Tampa General and St. Joseph's are each around 10 minutes by car, and Moffitt Cancer Center near USF is about 20–25 minutes.

Getting around

Walk for groceries and coffee; a car makes the rest easy, with downtown, Bayshore, Hyde Park, and SoHo all under 10 minutes and Tampa International about 10. No car? Lime and Spin e-bikes and scooters are available across the city through their apps.
